Google My Business Ads: How Business Profile Advertising Works

Google My Business is now called Google Business Profile. The profile itself is a free business listing; paid promotion is handled through Google Ads. A verified eligible Business Profile can be connected to advertising so location information can support ads and Maps-related experiences.

Google My Business vs Business Profile vs paid ads

The older “Google My Business” name is still widely searched, but Google now calls the listing a Business Profile. Creating or managing the profile is not the same as buying ads. Paid campaigns run through Google Ads, while the Business Profile provides business and location information that can be connected to eligible advertising features.

Verify and maintain the Business Profile first

Keep the business name, location or service area, phone, hours, website and category accurate. Verification and eligibility rules apply. A complete profile does not guarantee advertising performance, but incorrect business information can create a poor customer experience.

Connect location information to advertising

Google documents location assets and Business Profile connections for advertising. Depending on campaign type and eligibility, ads can use business location information and may appear in Search or Maps experiences. Current campaign options can change, so confirm the available setup in the live Google Ads account.

Choose a measurable campaign goal

Decide whether the campaign is intended to generate calls, website leads, store visits or another measurable action. Set a budget the business can sustain and configure conversion measurement where appropriate. Do not judge success only by ad impressions.

Measure local outcomes

Track the actions that matter to the business and compare them with spend. Search terms, calls, website enquiries and location-related actions can provide different signals depending on campaign type. Keep paid advertising results separate from organic Business Profile visibility when evaluating performance.

Location assets and Maps advertising

Google documents location assets as a way for eligible ads to use business information such as location details. Maps advertising can include formats associated with searches and map activity, depending on campaign type, account setup and eligibility. Businesses should use the current Google Ads interface and official documentation because available campaign types and placements can change.

Linking a Business Profile to advertising does not turn every profile view into a paid placement, and it does not mean ads will appear exclusively on Maps. Keep organic profile management and paid campaign reporting conceptually separate.

Common setup mistakes

Do not create advertising around an inaccurate or unverified location. Check that the advertising account, Business Profile and website represent the same business correctly. Use a realistic geographic target and conversion goal, and review search terms and lead quality instead of relying only on impressions. Service-area and category eligibility can also affect which profile advertising options are available.
